Not Sure Where to Start? Here’s Your Flight Path
Becoming a pilot in South Africa follows a structured process regulated by the
South African Civil Aviation Authority.
At Lowveld Aero Club, we guide you through each step — from your first flight to becoming a licensed pilot.
Experience flying first-hand with a qualified instructor.
- Sit in the pilot seat and take control under supervision
- Learn how the aircraft responds in real flight
- Ask questions and understand what training involves
This is the recommended starting point before committing to training.
Before training begins, you must be medically certified.
- Conducted by a SACAA-approved Aviation Medical Examiner (AME)
- Class 2 Medical → Required for Private Pilot License (PPL)
- Class 1 Medical → Required if you intend to pursue a Commercial Pilot License (CPL)
This ensures you meet the physical and cognitive requirements for safe flying.
Once medically fit, you can begin formal training.
- Register with a SACAA-recognised training organisation
- Receive a Student Pilot Licence (SPL)
- Begin structured ground school (theory training)
Subjects include:
- Air Law
- Meteorology
- Navigation
- Principles of Flight
This is your first official pilot license.
- Minimum 45 flight hours (typically 50–60 hours)
- Dual instruction + solo flying
- Pass theoretical exams and a practical flight test
Once completed, you are licensed to fly privately and carry passengers.
Enhance your flying capability and experience.
- Night Rating
- Cross-country flying
- Advanced handling
These build confidence and prepare you for more advanced training.
For those pursuing aviation as a career.
- Minimum 200 total flight hours
- Advanced theoretical exams
- Instrument Rating (IFR)
- Commercial flight test
This allows you to fly for hire and reward.
After obtaining your CPL:
- Build flight hours (instructing, charter, etc.)
- Work toward Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL)
- Apply to airlines locally or internationally
