Lowveld Aero Club Safety Management System (SMS)

Introduction

The Safety Management System (SMS) at Lowveld Aero Club is a structured framework designed to ensure the highest level of safety in all our flight training and club operations. It is mandated by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) under Civil Aviation Regulations Part 140 and associated Technical Standards. Our SMS aligns with international standards set by ICAO and is tailored to the complexity of our training activities and flying environment.

What is SMS?

SMS is a proactive and systematic approach to managing safety. At Lowveld Aero Club, it integrates safety into every aspect of our operations, from flight training to ground activities. The goal is to identify hazards, assess risks, and implement effective controls to prevent accidents and incidents.

Why is SMS Important?

  • Compliance: Required by SACAA regulations for all Approved Training Organizations (ATOs).
  • Safety Culture: Promotes a positive safety culture among our members, staff, students, and other aviators.

  • Continuous Improvement: Monitors safety performance and drives improvements.

  • A safer training and flying environment.
  • Clear procedures for reporting hazards.
  • Assurance that safety is our top priority.

Reporting Safety Concerns

We encourage everyone to report hazards or safety concerns. Our reporting system is fully online to ensure accurate record-keeping, speed up the management process, and allow us to quickly mitigate risks and hazards. Reports can be submitted:

  • Online: Via our Safety Reporting Portal.

All reports are treated confidentially and used solely to improve safety.

Continuous Improvement

Our SMS is not static. We regularly review and update our processes to adapt to new challenges and maintain compliance with SACAA and ICAO standards.
